ONE NIGHT ONLY: ALEC BALDWIN

Editorial Director / Writer

Spike’s One Night Only — part roast, part tribute special — honored the careers of iconic entertainers. Alec Baldwin had just debuted his SNL Trump when his One Night Only was announced, and SNL kindly requested it not be used in our show promotion. We understood. Grinded out weeks of concepts and scripts. But nothing stuck.

Then, I pitched a work-around. Because the show aired July 4th weekend, we dressed Alec as George Washington—except he still sounded like Trump. “Hello, it’s me, George Washington. A lot of people don’t know this, but this is how I sound.”

I wrote the script, revised and pitched jokes through production, and did run-throughs with Alec while in HMU. The digital piece secured an Entertainment Weekly exclusive, got picked up by every outlet in town, and won a Gold Promax and a Silver Clio.
